Personally , for me, as some one who grew up reading from the kiddish stuff to the absolute Grimm and gritty, my only grip with most superhero films these days is the lack of gravity. And by that, I mean the lack of consequence, (which is why I like spider-man 2 and man of steel along with winter solider for those examples). I like when there is something that I read that was mature in theme and see it get translated on the screen with as much as respect as possible to the themes and ideas that were presented in context to the material. The problem is, we live in a era (since the 40s and 50s) where businesses want to make money off of films that have an audience that will pay head over heals for it. Now anyone who knows me knows that I love comics and superheroes of course, but I also like good films. And out of a lot of superhero films, there hasn't been a lot of great ones (aside Spider-Man 2, dark knight, batman begins, winter solider) . These days the market is constantly banking on the amount of toy products sold instead of telling worth while stories and content.
And due to the amount of bad films or mediocre rather than good films, it leaves people feeling saturated and stagnant. Now, I've always wanted to see all the characters that I've liked and read all appear on the big screen for a huge life and death battle (infinity war), but the problem
Is that Hollywood only puts out subpar content and not good quality content. To be honest, I'm slightly more excited for batman v superman than Captain America :Civil War only because it's nice to get a nice contrast from the barely any consequence world of Marvel (which will bring to light all of the fallouts that transpired in Phase 2 and will be dealt with justly in CA: CivilWar . the Bigger problems pursue even further when you've rebooted certain characters so many times to the point where only the people who've known and seen the content change over time will probably be the only ones invested in. Because once you establish something as a successful first, it becomes iconic, and once it becomes iconic, it's hard to change people's opinion.
Point is, the more you make mediocre , or crappy content, the more people want nothing to do with it. But the more you make quality content that stands out and is different from the usual tropes, the more interesting it will be. Just like the music industry (mainstream hip hop as a focus) or video games (in terms of first person shooters ), people want to see the stuff that they have either always wanted to see fully realized or the stuff that they never thought they've seen before. But with the amount of crappie content released, it's caused people to want nothing to do with it, just like how people will barely replay video games on new consoles anymore, or listen to worth while content in hip hop because majority of the mainstream constantly put out music that barely has substance. And they keep doing because they know it works.
All I can say is, whatever happens to the man of tomorrow, Red Son, Injustice : Gods Among Us, Justice League Unlimited, Earth One, God Fall, batman /superman (04-2011), Dark Knight Returns, kingdom come, what's so funny about truth, justice and the American way. These stories give a good glimpse among many other stories that raise awareness about the social conscience and position that these characters have on society and vice versa. Personally I'm more interested in batman v superman than civil war because believe it or not, marvel has lacked Extremely on the nitty gritty (aside from Netflix, because they nailed it down right). Now marvel has become too family friendly and lack any sort of big world wide consequences (which Civil War will rectify that). Now I don't mind suspending belief at times, but over the last phase of the MCU, the consequences didn't feel so dire or as big as they were advertised and poorly presented. Man of steel did a good job at showing consequence and the idea that this is a man in a world that is starting out and just now learning at the age of 33 that his life is truly not of the planet that he has resided in for the last few years. And now they bring all those consequences to the fore front in batman v superman , who is right, who is wrong, moral ambiguity, flaws of humanity, god complexes, corporate interests and such. This film (I hope ) seems to truly dive into those themes and hopefully explores those aspects. Anyone who thinks that dc was never as dark as marvel, obviously haven't read crisis on infinite earths, identity crisis, infinite crisis, rock of ages, kingdom come, zero hour, and many other stories that deal with consequences.
