If there is one anime that I check up in on from time to time as both a nostalgia trip and out of curiosity and pure fun to watch, it's Dragon Ball Super. Mind you , ive been watching the original Japanese dub with English subtitles (which I prefer a lot more than the English dubs these days). I'll be the first to admit that after the two cinema releases Battle of the gods, and Revival of F, I wasn't too impressed with it once revisiting. Heck, I wasn't so fond of Super at first due to the retelling of the first two DBZ movies (first two made in over a decade since the series concluded in Japan and America). But after sitting down and watching it with my home boy Ralphy, discussing what we'd like to see , theorizing what we might see (and being correct about guesses of alternate universes ) it was just pretty fun.
It's the kind of series where you get the general idea of how the typical Dragon Ball shenanigans /routine is. It's the kind of series that I could miss a few episodes and come back to and still get a sense of what's going on prior to catching up. So far I've watched most of the episodes (so far episodes 1-46) and I have to say, (because I already watched the BotG and RoF) I was waiting to watch the newer arcs beyond what was already seen. But when I took the time to watch Super's version of those arcs (which were rearranged , adjusted , and expanded) I actually appreciated it more than I did with the cinematic versions. One can definitely tell that this series is a little bit more lighter in tone than the Z series which was more serious. But that isn't a bad thing, Super is like a culmination of dragon ball's humor and Z's action/story telling. Now I will say, I enjoyed the universe 6/ tournament arc a lot. I've always wanted to explore possible alternate universes with in the dragon ball universe. Fortunately we get glimpses and explanations for how the universes are (only briefly). Obviously it won't be on some DC comics multiverse level, but the fact that DB Super are tapping in to aspects of those elements is a great new addition to the DB mythos. My only complaints so far with the series is the fact that aside from Goku , and Vegeta, no one else within the Z fighters squad has gotten that powerful (I'm looking at you Gohan). In addition, I'd like to see the Saiyans (aside from Goku and Vegeta) get stronger and actually develop more as characters that could possibly surpass Goku (even though that'll never happen , at least in terms of surpassing that is). I will commend the choices that Super has made in terms of story elements. I just wish that Goku could be as serious as he was in the Z series when it came to threats. I know that he is more powerful than he has ever been, but I feel like that takes away from some of the development that he had from the Frieza saga and Cell saga. Then again, the same goes for gohan who still hasn't shaken off that horrible decline he had in the midst of the buu saga. But, there is still hope and time that Gohan will develop and possibly redeem his title as the second strongest guy next to Goku ( which was stated back in the buu saga funny enough).
I do enjoy that Vegeta is actually much more smarter than he ever was in the Z series. The viewer really sees the strategic aspect of Vegeta shine a lot more in this series (despite being blinded by pride as usual, but less so than the Z series). Super is Definitely a huge improvement over GT (which had some cool concepts but poorly done in execution most of the time). After watching episode 46 (seeing awesome call backs to Goku and Vegeta's fight back in the Saiyans saga , and a bit of the buu saga ), it's like watching a nice sizzle reel of homages of classic moments (like the Super Saiyan blue version of Kaiyo -Ken which had everyone on a great nostalgia trip with the Saiyans saga flashback).
But, what I love about this series so far is seeing Future Trunks again. And knowing that his future (which could still be a possible future ) causes him to go back to the past (which is our present) , to warn Goku and the other Z heroes of an evil known as black Goku was great. It's great in terms of the fact that this was stuff that I would to pitch to my friends. My friend Ralphy has mentioned wanting to see Broly and revive bardock and the Saiyans into the series (although I prefer the Broly pitch better). Regardless, this series has time to pick up and fix the lingering problems such as gohan not being as powerful as he once was during the Saiyan saga , goten and trunks actually being major players in the series, and developing the other characters to be something more. I especially want to see how future trunks will interact with his (past) kid counter part and how that'll affect kid trunks going forward in the series. At the end of the day, I know it's all about Goku, but Super can definitely learn a thing or two from other amines in terms of character development. It's all just a want and see game, but so far, so good. Bring on the Return of future trunks.
Plus, for every episode ,i'll try to do some digital drawings on my phone that accompany each post that i make.
